A long distance move can be a challenge. It requires a lot of planning to make it go smoothly.

Hire a Mover

A good mover can make your long distance house move a lot less stressful. But before you hire one, be sure to vet them carefully. There are many questions you should ask, from how much the move will cost to what COVID-19 precautions they take. And don't forget to ask about hidden fees, too!

Moving companies typically charge a flat fee to move your belongings, but sometimes extra charges are tacked on. Be sure to clarify these costs upfront so there are no surprises when it comes time to pay the bill. Also, it's a good idea to ask whether or not your mover offers full-value protection, which covers your items in the event of damage or loss during transport.

Another thing to keep in mind when hiring movers is the date you're planning on moving. Ideally, you want to avoid Fridays, as this is when most people are moving and it can be hard to find movers with availability. Instead, try to plan your move between Monday and Thursday mornings during the middle of the month.

Also, be sure to consider whether or not your new home is a walkable neighborhood or if the roads will allow larger trucks to get in and out. If not, your mover may have to charge you more for a shuttle service or have to disassemble furniture in order to get it into the truck. And lastly, be sure to check with your new city about any parking restrictions on movers.

Once you've chosen a date for your move, start getting things ready. This includes cleaning and defrosting the refrigerator a day or two in advance, packing up your belongings, and making copies of important documents. Also, don't forget to schedule utility installation and enroll your kids in school before the move. This way, everything will be taken care of at the same time and you won't have to worry about doing it all at the last minute. To ensure you don't miss any important tasks, set reminders on your phone or in your calendar to keep yourself on track.

Transportation

Arranging transportation for family members and pets during a long distance house move is crucial. If possible, plan to travel by plane rather than driving, as this can greatly cut down on moving time. In the event that you have to drive, make arrangements to rent a car or ship your vehicle ahead of time. Ensure your family has all the necessities of life during transit, such as food, water and shelter. It’s also important to make arrangements for your kids and pets to say goodbye to friends, neighbors and schoolmates if necessary. Clearly label all boxes to prevent them from being dropped off at the wrong house. This is especially important if you’re using a storage unit.

Lastly, arrange for a clean home to be available upon your arrival at the new location.
