When it comes to the history of non-stick cookware, a few major players have been involved. In 1954, Colette Gregoire, an inventor from France, patented a new method for making non-stick cookware. In 1956, she and her husband Thomas Gregoire created the Tefal Corporation, taking the words "Tef" and "Al" from the chemicals used to make the non-stick materials. Thomas Hardie, a businessman, met Gregoire on a trip to the United States and joined the company. He changed the name of the company to T-Fal after Gregoire's death.

Teflon

Most Teflon non-stick cookware contains a chemical known as PFOA. While PFOA is not harmful at normal temperatures, it does release toxic fumes. Exposure to these fumes can cause illnesses like polymer fume fever and flu. Although the safety of Teflon non-stick cookware is still unknown, it is a popular choice for many cooks.

Dupont

The plaintiffs in the Dupont non-stick cookware litigation have sought damages for the harm their products have caused. Among their requests are the establishment of a fund for scientific researchers to investigate the effects of the product, the removal of the non-stick coatings from the product, and rescission and restitution of any contracts for the non-stick cookware. If the plaintiffs are successful, DuPont will have to pay damages on top of any punitive damages.

Ceramic nonstick coatings

A ceramic nonstick coating prevents food from sticking to the surface of the pan. However, if you don't cook your food in the pan, you can end up with a burnt or undercooked meal. Furthermore, ceramic coated cookware does not heat evenly and quickly. Additionally, ceramic coated pans cannot be placed in a dishwasher. In addition, the non-stick surface of a ceramic coated pan can become damaged faster if you use a metal utensil on it.

PFOA

PFOA is a chemical compound found in a wide range of consumer goods, from firefighting foam to food packaging containers. It was widely used for decades before the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) began to regulate its use. In West Virginia, the chemical was dumped into water supplies because of the lack of EPA regulation. EPA regulations were introduced after many people started to develop illnesses around chemical plants.

PTFE

You may have heard of PFOA and non-stick cookware, but did you know that they can be harmful to your health? This chemical is a greenhouse gas and is suspected of being a hormone disruptor. It lingers in your body and has been found in newborn babies, marine animals, and polar bears. Though it's no longer made as a coating for non-stick cookware, it can still cause adverse health effects in the human body.
