In part two of this article on how to choose a socket set we answer more of the questions you need to know about what seems to be a very simple tool.

How many sockets should I purchase?

If you’re just starting out, we recommend that you purchase a basic set of six-sockets and a ratchet and extension. This will provide you with the most essential tools for most home and automotive projects. If you’re looking for more, we recommend that you purchase a set of 12 sockets and a ratchet and extension. This will provide you with more options for automotive and other projects. Some people will purchase a set of 12 sockets and a ratchet and extension, while others will purchase an 18-socket set. The cost of the socket sets will vary based on the number of sockets included.

Should I get a limited or standard set of sockets?

A limited socket set is a cheaper option for those who don’t plan on doing a lot of wrenching. These kits are usually under $30 and include the most basic sockets—generally around six or eight. The downside is that they don’t come with an extension bar, which is necessary for accessing some tight spaces.

Standard sets are more expensive, but they come with extension bars, usually in the range of 12-24. They also typically include the most common sizes for bolts and screws. You can also purchase more sockets at a later time if you need them, which is sometimes cheaper than buying a whole new set.

There are many factors to consider when selecting a socket set for your needs. Ask yourself what size bolts you will be working with, how often you will use the set, and what your budget is before making your purchase.

What size of socket should I buy?

The size of the socket you need depends on the size of the bolt. There are three different sizes of sockets: 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2".

The most common socket size is 3/8". If you are working on a bolt that is less than 3/4" you will need a 1/4" socket. If you are working on a bolt that is more than 3/4" you will need a 1/2" socket.

The 3/8" socket size is most commonly used in most household repairs, so it would be a good purchase for most people. If you plan to do a lot of home repairs, then you should consider buying a 1/2" socket just in case.

Should a ratchet be included in the set, and if so, which size?

The first question to ask yourself before buying a set is, "Do I need a ratchet?" A ratchet is an excellent tool because it tightens bolts without having to switch sockets. However, if you are somebody who does not use a ratchet often, then you should not spend the extra money.

Another question to ask yourself is what size ratchet do you need? If you are doing automotive work, then the sockets should be 3/8-inch. But, if you are just tightening bolts around your house, then the sockets should be 1/4-inch.

If you are just buying the set for home use, then you probably will not need a socket set that has filters on it. For someone who is doing automotive work, though, these filters are an important feature. A socket set with filters will filter out all of the metal shavings that might get in the sockets.

If you are just looking for a set for home use, then you will not need any sockets that have a swivel top. If you are just doing automotive work, then the swivel top is an important feature.
