Plan your wall

The first thing you need to do is plan your wall. Measuring and plotting out your wall is essential before you can even begin the spade work. Calculate what you need and only then can you begin to build.

Select your bricks

There are different types of bricks and know what bricks to use is important. Lowes stocks a variety of different bricks and has all the expertise on hand to help you choose the correct bricks for your project.  In  nutshell there are 3 types of brick:

  •         Severe Weathering – can withstand ground contact
  •         Medium Weathering – can withstand outdoor temperatures but no ground contact
  •         No Weathering – indoor use only

Get the right amount of bricks

In your planning stage you will have calculated how many bricks you need. It is always worthwhile purchasing a few extras. Standard bricks have "specified" dimensions 3⅝" wide, 2¼" tall, and 7⅝" long. Mortar joints are typically ½" thick. Taking the mortar into account, each brick will take up 4⅛" x 2¾" x 8¼" of space. This will help you calculate the number bricks you require.

Dig your Trench

Once you have your building materials you need to dig your trench. Often called a footer the trench should be 1 foot deep. Fill with concrete to make a solid foundation. You must also ensure there is adequate draining away from the footer or foundation.

Drive wooden stakes in

Your wall needs to be level to do this Find drive some stakes into the ground.  You need to find  the nominal height of your bricks (the height of the bricks plus 1/2" for mortar), then drive the posts so that they are all this height below the top of the trench.

Mix and Pour Concrete

Lowes has all the building supplies you need including bags of cement. Fill in the trench up to the top of the stakes, leaving the space you measured for your bricks. Leave the cement for 2 to 3 days to set and cure.

Guideposts

Using 2 long pieces of wood mark the levels of the bricks and mortars to guide you as you begin to lay your bricks. The guideposts need to be freestanding and be at least as high as your wall will be. Remember to lay your first row of bricks carefully.
