Winter is Coming

Winter is hot on the heels of us all now November is here and our homes need a little help to get them ready and into winter survival mode. November is about cold weather, snow in some parts and Black Friday and don’t forget to be Thankful at Thanksgiving. Theee are a few things you need to do around the house in November, do you know what they and are you ready?  Here is a quick home checklist to help you get ready for Winter this November.

Clean your gutters and downpipes

Fall arrived a while back and the leaves started falling. The colors of fall are amazing but falling leaves block your gutters, drains and downspouts real fast. Blocked gutters and downspouts can cause problems and the water flowing off your roof can get trapped. In winter, as the temperatures begin to drop, this trapped water freezes and expands. This in turn can cause damage.  You need to clean and clear everywhere leaves have fallen. This may mean a somewhat laborious DIY job with ladders, hoses and brushes or you can call in the professionals.  Either way, the task of clearing your gutters and downspouts is one you won’t regret doing this November.

Check Outdoor handrails and steps

As the days become shorter and light becomes precious steps can become dangerous places in the dark. Ice can form and make steps slippery, snow can cover them and you need to grip handrails tighter for better balance. If your steps are not in good condition, loose steps if wooden or broken stone, brickwork or concrete makes them uneven winter can make them a death trap.  Before winter really sets in you need to give your steps and stairs outdoors a good once over. Replace any broken steps, tighten, secure or replace loose or wobbly handrails and make them save once more.  This is not a difficult job, nor does it need to be costly. Again you can either do it yourself or call in a contractor to make sure the job is done properly.

Outdoor Lighting

As with your steps and stairs outdoors so your outdoor lighting needs to be in good working order too. It may even be that you have been promising to install or put up some outdoor lighting all summer and have never got around to do so. November is the one time where you really need to sort your lighting out once and for. In the dark slippery places can become dangerous and good outdoor lighting is easy and affordable to install.  You can do this yourself or if you want a really good job done call in some professionals to give you some quality safety and security lighting.
