One machine many gardeners require is a garden trimmer but how do you choose the right machine for you?

Why a String Trimmer

String trimmers are easiest way to tidy up the edges of your freshly mowed lawn.  Reaching the places your mower cannot reach or cutting grass in small patches a string trimmer is a versatile tool. Once only used by professional gardening services string trimmers are now commonly available and vastly more affordable. Having the right trimmer for your needs is essential.

Electric Trimmers

Electric Trimmers are very simple garden machines. Often quite lightweight and easy to handle such  machines are affordable and very popular. Easy to maintain and use, operated with single button electric trimmers can be corded or battery powered. Corded machines have a limited range and are suited best to smaller gardens or spaces with easily accessible outdoor power sources.  Battery powered machines have improved in recent years and the battery life has become vastly better than earlier models.  Battery powered machines are rechargeable, lightweight and as with all electric trimmers the sting us easy to replace.

Gas Powered Trimmers

Gas powered string trimmers are vastly more powerful than electric machines and are much more professional machines. The machines have superb mobility and excellent run times.  Built for than just cutting grass the machines can cut through light bushes and brush with ease. Modern gas powered trimmers have an easy start but many still use a pull start that is relatively easy to use. Gas trimmers do need more maintenance than electric machines and the gas engine will need a regular service as with chainsaws and lawnmowers.

Garden Size

Larger gardens and spaces need a more powerful trimmer to efficiently maintain it.

Lawns Up to 1/2 Acre: Cordless trimmers ranging from 20-volt max to 40-volt max work well. If there's a power outlet within 100 feet of the lawn perimeter, consider a corded string trimmer. Gas trimmers can work for these too.

Lawns 1/2 Acre to 1 Acre: Cordless trimmers from 40-volt max to 80-volt max are good choices, but you can also consider a gas trimmer.

Lawns Larger Than 1 Acre: Gas trimmers are a good choice.

In addition to being effective for larger areas, more powerful trimmers can handle thicker grass and weeds and can often take on additional tasks with optional attachments. Check the cutting swath or cutting width of the trimmer. Models with larger widths trim larger areas in fewer passes.
